The Mary Rose Ticket Portal

8th Feb 2025: Talk & Tour: Music and Sound in the Tudor World

Join us for a fascinating talk and tour experience which will explore the music, musicians and instruments of the Tudor period. Examine what music may have been heard across the scope of society at the time, from the nobility to the everyday music of the common people.

The crew of the Mary Rose contained a cross section of people from Tudor society from wealthy and educated, to humbler working men. By looking at the music from this time in this way we can gain a greater understanding of the social environment and context in which music would have been experienced by the men aboard the ship.  Your guest speaker Jez smith is a historic musician, qualified and experienced museum professional, and specialist in historical music from the medieval and Tudor periods to the early 17th century. He plays a wide range of instruments including, lute, gittern, lute guitar, hurdy gurdies, various period bagpipes and the nyckelharpa.

Next you will  explore the museum galleries and collection with an expert museum guide, including behind the scenes areas not on display to the public. Jez will accompany you on the tour, and offer insights into the musical instruments on display in the museum collection.

What to expect:

·       Talk with expert, 45 min – one hour with time for Q&A

·       Tea and coffee provided

·       Guided tour exploring all three decks of the museum

·       Behind the scenes access to our Reserve Collection not on display to the public
