Join us on the 6th December to make your own garland or wreath inspired by Tudor midwinter traditions.
During the Tudor period, Yuletide was a time of rest where communities came together. In a time before Christmas trees, homes were decorated with mistletoe, holly, yew and laurel to celebrate the season. A log was decorated with ribbons and laid on the hearth, kept alight throughout the 12 days of Christmas in the hopes of good luck for the year to follow.
Drawing inspiration from these customs you will be able to make your own garland or wreath working with evergreens and seasonal items. All equipment and materials will be supplied along with tutelage every step of the way. Explore our galleries, discovering everyday Tudor life to spark creativity and gain inspiration. Then, begin your workshop with a glass of prosecco (or a soft alternative) before a short introduction to Tudor Christmas traditions and your wreath/garland making session.
Perfect for those wanting to spend time with friends and family, or even for Christmas team building.

The Mary Rose:The Navigation Items Recovered
The Mary Rose, a Tudor warship that served as a flagship in King Henry VIII's navy, holds a unique place in maritime history. Her story is one of triumph, tragedy, and rediscovery, offering insight into 16th-century naval warfare and life aboard a ship. Built in 1510 and launched in 1511, she served for 34 years before tragically sinking in the Solent during a battle in 1545. Rediscovered centuries later, her recovery in 1982 marked one of the most ambitious and celebrated maritime archaeological projects of all time. Among the treasures salvaged from her wreck were important navigation items and tools that shed light on the era's maritime practices.
One of the most compelling aspects of the Mary Rose’s recovery is the wealth of artefacts that provide a glimpse into Tudor life at sea. Among these are several navigation items and tools that reveal how sailors of the era charted their courses and navigated the often-treacherous waters. This talk will highlight the reality of 16th Century navigation by examining these items.
The Mary Rose’s recovery is more than a testament to advanced archaeology; it is a window into the past. The ship and her artefacts provide invaluable insights into Tudor-era technology, warfare, and daily life. The meticulous preservation work continues to inspire historians, scientists, and visitors from around the world.
Today, the Mary Rose Museum serves as a reminder of the ship’s storied past and the ingenuity of her recovery. The navigation tools, in particular, illustrate the evolving art and science of maritime navigation during a transformative era in naval history.
The tour will start at 10:30am and last roughly 1 hour. The talk will start immediatly after this and last 1 hour
Tea and Coffee included.
Please Note: All talks and tours are an add on to your existing attraction ticket, please ensure you have your ticket to gain access to the museum.

The sea can be a dangerous place. How did travellers in the past cope with the risks and dangers that they faced? Especially in the sixteenth century, when sailors were at the mercy of the wind and waves, relying on stars to find their way across the ocean, it's not surprising that magic and superstitions abounded.
Join Dr Tabitha Stanmore in an exploration of practical magic in English history. We will hear about the role magic played in everyday life, and especially the spells used aboard ships like the Mary Rose. There were charms to call the wind and calm the waters, amulets to protect against the sea, and magical contracts to bring sailors safely home. By the end of the talk, you'll know how important the supernatural was to our ancestors' lives and why it made sense to them.
Dr Tabitha Stanmore is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Exeter, and a specialist in early modern magic and witchcraft. She has appeared on BBC Radio 3 and BBC 4, and written for BBC History Magazine, TIME magazine, and The Daily Telegraph. Her first book, Cunning Folk: Life in the era of practical magic is based on her PhD research and out in paperback on 28th May.
