Tudor historian and writer Dr Phil Roberts tells the fascinating story of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, his rise to power under Henry VIII and his drastic fall from grace leading to accusations of treason after failing to secure King Henry’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon.  Serving first under Henry VII, and then his son Henry VIII, Wolsey was Lord Chancellor of England by 1520 and the King’s right-hand man.  Though he reached toppling heights of success, these were quickly snuffed out by accusations of treason which led to the cardinal’s spectacular fall from power.

This riveting talk will be given by author and lecture Dr Phil Roberts, long associated with Mary RoseTrust, Robert’s has appeared regularly on BBC radio to talk about the Tudors and the British Royal Family.  This talk will be followed by a behind the scenes tour given by one of our expert guides, exploring the Mary Rose and her collection, with access to our Reserve Collection, not open to the public.  Refreshments will be served in our Wardroom, with access to our exterior viewing balcony. There will also be a book signing with Dr Roberts, and your chance to pick up a copy of Cardinal Wolsey: For King and Country.

Please note: price includes talk and tour, signed books are available at an additional cost, access to the Mary Rose Museum is provided for the duration of this experience only. Should you wish to visit the museum on a later date a valid ticket will be required.

This December, join us at the Mary Rose Museum and learn how to make a Christmas Kissing Bough, the Tudor forerunner of our familiar Christmas wreath! You can even personalise your creation with an item that means something to you, a photograph, or a Christmas decoration perhaps. Take your Kissing Bough home with you to be the centrepiece of your festive celebrations. Perfect for those wanting to spend time with friends and family, or even for Christmas team building fun!

The Kissing Bough, a ball of greenery, was one of the most popular Christmas decorations in Tudor times. Similar to Victorian wreaths, Tudor Christmas boughs were woven from ash or willow wood and then covered in evergreen foliage and fruits. They were often hung on walls or over doorways as a gesture of goodwill – to welcome guests into the home. The boughs gave birth to the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe – which was first documented in the 16th century.

Working with holly, ivy, rosemary, bay and seasonal fruits, you will have a 90 minute practical making session in which you will create your kissing bough. You will then have time to explore the museum afterwards at your own leisure. All equipment and materials will be supplied.

*Includes a glass of prosecco and a sweet treat!

Join us for a fascinating talk and tour experience which will explore the music, musicians and instruments of the Tudor period. Examine what music may have been heard across the scope of society at the time, from the nobility to the everyday music of the common people.

The crew of the Mary Rose contained a cross section of people from Tudor society from wealthy and educated, to humbler working men. By looking at the music from this time in this way we can gain a greater understanding of the social environment and context in which music would have been experienced by the men aboard the ship.  Your guest speaker Jez smith is a historic musician, qualified and experienced museum professional, and specialist in historical music from the medieval and Tudor periods to the early 17th century. He plays a wide range of instruments including, lute, gittern, lute guitar, hurdy gurdies, various period bagpipes and the nyckelharpa.

Next you will  explore the museum galleries and collection with an expert museum guide, including behind the scenes areas not on display to the public. Jez will accompany you on the tour, and offer insights into the musical instruments on display in the museum collection.
